Escala de Conocimiento de la Enfermedad de Alzheimer: Adaptación y Análisis de las Propiedades Psicométricas en Estudiantes Universitarios Ecuatorianos. Alzheimer’s Disease Knowledge Scale: Adaptation and Analysis of Psychometric Properties in Ecuadorian University Students

The aim of this study was to develop a linguistic adaptation of the Alzheimer’s Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS), and to provide evidence on the reliability and validity of the adapted test. The ADKS is a self-administered instrument that examines knowledge about risk factors, assessment and diagnosis, symptoms, course, impact on life, care and treatment and management of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Methods: An instrumental study was implemented. The ADKS items were adapted to the Ecuadorian use of the Spanish language through an iterative process of translation by experts. Next, a sample of 523 university students completed the adapted scale together with a set of other instruments to analyze the fiability and criterion validity of the scale.

Results: ADKS Ecuador showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α=.78), adequate test-retest reliability, p > .05, and convergent and discriminatory evidence of validity when related to other variables.

Conclusion: ADKS Ecuador is an adequate instrument to assess general knowledge about AD in young highlgy educated Ecuadorian population with low dom ain knowledge.

Adaptación Lingüística de la Batería de Evaluación Neuropsicológica “BREV” en Una Población de Escolares Ecuatorianos. Linguistic Adaptation Of The Neuropsychological Evaluation Battery “BREV” In A Population Of Ecuadorian Schoolchildren.

This article reports the process followed for the linguistic adaptation of the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery “BREV” in a population of Ecuadorian school children. The translation-back-translation method was used. The final version of the test was applied to a pilot sample of 100 schoolchildren from the city of Cuenca – Ecuador. The piloting revealed results similar to the original version in most of the subtests, however, there are still certain adaptation errors at the level of some terms and stimuli of the test that must be corrected. The statistical results demonstrated a significance of 5% (p <0.05) in the correlations between the performance of each subtest and the age of the Ecuadorian children. It was concluded that the final version of the linguistic adaptation of the Battery “BREV” obtained in this first part of the investigation similar results to the original version; but a statistical analysis by retest is necessary to ensure the equivalence and reliability of the adapted instrument with respect to the original French test.

Propiedades Psicométricas del Inventario CABI Para la Determinación del TDAH. Psychometric Properties Of The Cabi Inventory In The Determination Of ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequent mental health issues among children and adolescents

worldwide. Current literature shows that ADHD could affect both academic and work performances of those who present it. The aim of the present study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Child and Adolescence Behavior Inventory (CABI) through an exploratory study, based on the report of 350 Chilean parents. Results indicated a three-dimensional model (sluggish cognitive tempo, inattention and hyperactivity) with adequate fit of the data (RMSEA=0.065; CFI= 0.954; TLI=0.941; PL=207) that explained 61.76% of the total variance with an Alpha of 0.961. Results show that the subscales analyzed have acceptable psychometric properties, an adequate internal consistency and that their indicators have a correct discriminatory power.

Therefore, according to these preliminary results, CABI can be considered a useful assessment tool for the diagnosis of ADHD. Implications for practice, policy and future research are discussed.

Validación de Diferentes Escalas en la Evaluación del Pronóstico de Pacientes con Hemorragia Subaracnoidea Espontánea en el Hospital Regional “Dr. Teodoro Maldonado Carbo” entre Mayo-2011 y Mayo-2014

Background: Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) is associated with a high mortality rate and functional consequences. Several scales have been created in order to assess prognosis after SAH, and even though they have been widely studied, neither has achieved universal acceptance.
Objective: Validate different scales assessing the prognosis of patients with spontaneous SAH in a local hospital population.
Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on patients admitted to the “Dr. Teodoro Maldonado Carbo” Hospital, diagnosed with spontaneous SAH, between 18 and 75 years. Descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation coefficient were calculated in order to evaluate the association of the Hunt and Hess, WFNS and Fisher Scales with functional outcome.
Results: Hunt and Hess Scale had a higher correlation (60,3%; p=0,000) with the functional outcome at discharge or death, compared to 55,3% (p=0,000) obtained by the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons Scale and 50% (p=0,000) by Fisher Scale. In addition, the Glasgow Coma Scale score (-58,4%; p=0,000), altered pupillary response (54,7%; p=0,000) and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (73,8%; p=0,000) were factors associated with functional score.
Conclusion: Hunt and Hess Scale revealed a good correlation with the Rankin functional scale at discharge or death, and is superior to the other scales in evaluating the prognosis of patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Efectos del Tratamiento Rehabilitador y el “Treadmill” en Pacientes con Ataxia.

Ataxia is a syndrome related to gait disorders that makes necessary a wide range of possibilities in rehabilitation in order to improve the disorder. The treadmill can be useful because it combines motor learning and sensory tricks. This study included 15 patients with ataxia from CIREN clinic. Treatment including treadmill was applied in 30 sessions, one hour each one. Motor function was evaluated pre and post treatment using ICARS scale, velocity, number and width of paces and Hausser index. Comparing results before and after intervention showed statistically significative improvement in ICARS scale and LEIS (p<0.001 and p<0.041 respectively). Rehabilitation treatment including treadmill has favorable effects over gait disorders in patients with ataxia.
